“The Test of Best Self”

 

A good friend who came by to see me told me about an opportunity he had in business not long ago that would have made him a wealthy man.  But he turned it down because it had some shady angles.  “I couldn’t do it,” he said.  “I just couldn’t do it and live with myself.”

 

Ralph Stockman once reminded us of that old prayer of confession from the ancient church: “We have erred and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep.”  Stockman went on to say that the greatest temptations of Christians today is to become “herd-minded” – always “browsing along with our heads down,” automatically following the herd, never looking up to find our own direction, our own identity, our own standards, our own morality, our own best self.

 

If you have a perplexed conscience; if you are facing a stressful, ethical dilemma, or a moral decision; if you are trying to distinguish between right and wrong – then try the test of the best self; Can I do this thing and still be true to my best self?

 

As the greatest test of all…never neglect the Word of God as our final compass.
