Cook on Kennedy

Cook on Kennedy….

We were saddened to hear of Senator Ted Kennedy’s death.  Many things are prominent in the media reminiscent of his life.  Kennedy made many statements through his famed career.  He once was quoted on a political stump saying, “Families across America know better.”  I believe there was much truth in that statement.  One of the grave dangers that American’s face today is their belief “they are too far away from the process to make a difference.”  The Senator   once said, “I think about my brother’s everyday.”  I thought that really gave an insight into the care and concern that he had for FAMILY.  Regardless of whether you agreed with Ted’s political positions or not, it would be hard to argue with the facts.  He loved his country, he was passionate about what he believed and he loved his family.

Strange But True……

Strange But True……

John Lennon (Singer) – Some years before his death, during his interview with an American magazine, said:  “Christianity will end, it will disappear.  I do not have to argue about that, I am certain.”  He went on to say in the same interview, “Jesus is OK, but his subjects were too simple, today we are more famous than Him.”  This was stated in a 1966 interview.

Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.

Tancredo Neves (President of Brazil) – During the Brazilian Presidential Campaign he stated that if he got 500,000 votes from his party, not even God would remove him from the Presidency.

Neves got the votes, but got sick a day before being made President; then he died.

The man responsible for building the Titanic (Ship Builder) – After the construction of the Titanic, a reporter asked him how safe the Titanic would be.  With an ironic tone he said, “Not even God can sink it.”

The result:  I think you all know what happened to the Titanic!

Marilyn Monroe (Actress) – She was visited by Billy Graham during a presentation of a show.  He said the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her.  After hearing what Graham had to say, Monroe said, “I don’t need your Jesus.”

A week later, she was found dead in her apartment.

Bon Scott (Singer) – The ex-vocalist of the AC/DC, on one of his 1979 songs sang, “Don’t stop me; I am going down all the way, down the hallway to hell.”

On the 19th of February 1980, Bon Scott was found dead.  He had choked on his own vomit.

Christine Jewitt (Jamaican Journalist and Entertainer) – Stated that the Bible (Word of God) was the worst book ever written.

In June 2006 she was found burned beyond recognition in her motor vehicle.

What do you think about these cases and their results?

This summer has been a wild one at our home.  A number of families have stayed with us for a week or more.  Several of those families have small children and pre-schoolers. (One family had five children, another had four children.)  We love to have guests in our home. In the 52 weeks of the year, we typically will have people in our home during 30-35 of those weeks.  Our friends are very dear to us.  We love spending time with them all.

One of the challenges that guests face, when staying in a home that is not their own, is getting used to things.  Where things are located, being cautious not to infringe or disturb those who own the home, and of course they greatest fear of all….do not tear anything up!  I warn every group that lodges in our home about backing out of our driveway.  There is a three foot high power box located a few feet off of our drive.  It is just short enough that it is hard to see through a rear window when someone is backing up.  If a person is not careful, they will back into the box and this is not good.

In the middle of July, after I warned some of our guests of the danger, my wife was riding in the car with one of our friends.  As they backed out of our drive way the rear warning signal began to go off.  As the driver got closer and closer to the power box, the warning indicator got faster and faster, louder and louder, until the car smashed into the box.  Remorse abounded as we called the local power company to appeal to them to come repair the box.

A few days later, another “batch” of guests came to stay at our home.  I made my usual spiel, “Watch out for the power box when you back out.”  In fact, I took the couple out into the front yard and physically showed them where the box was located and shared the experience that had just occurred with the previous guests.  Within 48 hours of warning them… guessed it…..SMASH!  The box was crushed again.

I was amazed.  Amazed, not because two people had run over the power box, but because we had worked so diligently to warn them of the imminent danger.  Paul’s words were, “These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.  So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you do not fall!” (1 Cor. 10:11-12)  I wonder if God ever becomes frustrated with his children after hundreds of warnings…and we find ourselves over and over again remorseful and guilty.
